What we do,
why we started, and
where we're going.

VJMS Wien is a Vienna-based non-profit that runs Erasmus+ youth exchanges, intercultural workshops, and active-citizenship programs for people aged 18–30. We work with partner organisations across Europe and are based in Vienna's 15th district.

Our mission

We move young people across Europe — through Erasmus+ exchanges, intercultural workshops, and active-citizenship programs — because mobility is one of the most concrete forms of opportunity a young person can be given.

01

Mobility programs

Erasmus+ youth exchanges (5–21 days) for participants aged 18–30, designed and run jointly with partner organisations across Europe.

02

Workshops in Vienna

Intercultural dialogue sessions, language exchange, and active-citizenship programs hosted in Vienna and open to anyone in the 18–30 range.

03

European partnerships

Long-term partnerships with NGOs, cultural organisations, and youth groups in Austria and across Europe — built one project at a time.

Origin

Why we started this.

VJMS Wien was founded in 2026 by Shehroz Ali and Ahmed Abdelati — two people who came to Vienna from elsewhere and built their adult lives here. The association is registered with the Landespolizeidirektion Wien (ZVR 1493880648) and operates as a non-profit (gemeinnütziger Verein) under §§ 34–47 of the Austrian Federal Fiscal Code.

The reason VJMS exists is specific: European youth mobility programs are well-funded and well-designed on paper, but they too often fail to reach the young people in Vienna who would benefit most — first-generation Austrians, recent arrivals, people without family networks already plugged into the Erasmus+ infrastructure. The information is in the wrong places, the applications feel forbidding, and the entire system rewards people who already know how it works.

The founders know what that gap feels like from the other side of it. VJMS Wien exists to close it — by running real programs, with real funding, that reach the people the system is supposed to serve.

Our scope, per § 2 of our statutes, covers the full range of activities the Austrian non-profit framework permits in this space: Erasmus+ projects, intercultural educational materials, cooperation with public institutions and NGOs, events promoting active citizenship, and educational strategies that support the professional and personal development of young people.

We start small. We work in public. We invite scrutiny.

Founders

Two founders.
One mission.

We met in Vienna. We both came from somewhere else. We know what mobility means when you're twenty-two and don't have a plan — and we know how rarely it happens by accident.

Shehroz Ali
Obmann · Chairperson · Co-founder

Shehroz Ali is the founding chairperson of VJMS Wien. Born in Sukkur, Pakistan, he has built his adult life in Vienna and now leads the association's strategy, partnerships, and external representation. Moving across borders himself gave him a working understanding of what European mobility programs can mean — and where they too often fail to reach the young people who would benefit most. He founded VJMS Wien in 2026 to make that infrastructure actually reach Vienna's youth.

Ahmed Abdelati
Co-founder · Board member

Ahmed Abdelati co-founded VJMS Wien in 2026. Originally from Dakahliya, Egypt, and now based in Vienna, he works alongside Shehroz on programs, finance, and operations. His own path through European institutions, language barriers, and opportunity gaps gave him a clear view of what makes a youth mobility program actually useful — and what makes one merely exist on paper. That perspective shapes how VJMS chooses partners, designs projects, and prioritises the young people it works with first.

What we believe

Four principles we work by.

01

Mobility as opportunity

Going somewhere new is one of the most concrete forms of opportunity. We move people — not just ideas about moving people.

02

Intercultural exchange

You figure out who you are, in part, by meeting people who grew up differently. We make that meeting happen.

03

Active citizenship

Mobility isn't tourism. It's training for participation. We connect young people to the work of their communities.

04

Solidarity & peace

European cooperation is fragile and worth protecting. We work in small, practical ways that ripple outward.

How we work

Four things you should know about us.

The mechanics underneath the mission — how programs get funded, how partners get chosen, how participants get supported.

01

Erasmus+ funded

Our exchanges are funded through the European Union's Erasmus+ programme, administered in Austria by the OeAD (Österreichische Austauschdienst). Participants pay nothing.

02

Partner-led design

We design every exchange jointly with at least one partner organisation in the host country. The work — and the credit — is shared. We don't run anything alone.

03

Small cohorts

Groups of 6–12 participants, 5–21 days. Big enough for genuine exchange. Small enough that everyone in the cohort is seen, named, and supported individually.

04

End-to-end support

From application through return, we handle the paperwork — visas, insurance, Erasmus+ administrative requirements, travel coordination. Your job is to show up and engage.
